Speaker of Iran’s parliament arrived in Qatar on Saturday for talks on relations between Tehran and Doha.

Iran Press/Middle East: Ali Larijani arrived in the Qatari capital on Saturday to take part in the 140th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), scheduled for 6-10 April 2019, where parliamentary delegations from 180 countries around the world are expected to attend.

The meeting will be attended by all IPU statutory bodies, including the Governing Council, Standing Committees, Committees on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians and on Middle East questions, as well as the Forum of Women Parliamentarians and the Forum of Young MPs, Iran Press reported.

Theme of the General Debate will focus on "parliaments as platforms to enhance education for peace, security and the rule of law".

The 139th IPU General Assembly was held in the Swiss city of Geneva in October of last year.

Before leaving for Doha, Larijani said that Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is an opportunity for expansion of bilateral relation between Iran and Qatar and also international cooperation in all fields.

He also said that while some of Iran's provinces were hit with floods, US secretary of state Mike Pompeo in a statement had spread some lies about Iran, and had blocked aid and donations from International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to the country.

The Iranian parliament speaker visited Qatar in March 2015.

The two Persian Gulf littoral states have signed several protocols to increase bilateral trade and mutual cooperation.

Commerce between Iran and Qatar is increasing. Tehran said recently that trade with Qatar had risen by $250 million in the 12 months to March as Doha becomes more reliant upon Iranian imports such as food products.
