A senior Iranian MP and a member of the Iranian parliament's national security and foreign policy commission, emphasised that the Trump Administration is interfering in the domestic affairs of Venezuela, an independent nation, violating international laws and norms.

Iran Press/Iran news: In an exclusive interview with Iran Press on Tuesday, the senior Iranian MP Seyyed Hossein Naghavi Hosseini said: "Only recently we had free and fair elections in Venezuela and a lawful legitimate government was formed based on the votes of the Venezuelan people. However the United States is now openly interfering in the domestic affairs of Venezuela and wants to dictate its own policies to Venezuelan politicians, and change the results of elections in that country through force and coercion".

Naghavi Hosseini pointedly added: "The Americans have a long and disgraceful history of forcefully changing the results of national elections which they don't like, in many different countries. But world public opinion wants to know why the Unite States is breaking international laws. According to United Nations Charter, international laws and conventions, the citizens of a country decide who governs them, through the ballot box. The United States should not and must not decide for the Venezuelan people."

The senior MP went on to ask rhetorically: "Who the Americans think they are, to tell the Venezuelan people who should govern their country? They want to dictate who should govern in Syria or in Iran. They want to install their own puppet. Their meddling is against international laws and United Nations Charter. They are so brazen that Donald Trump has ordered 5000 US troops to go to neighbouring Colombia to manage what is happening in Venezuela. Undoubtedly, this US action will lead to mayhem, bloodshed and crisis in Venezuela."

Naghavi Hosseini also expressed disappointment that some European countries had decided to back US actions and policies in Venezuela. He poignantly said: "It is regrettable that some European countries, despite their claims of being independent from United States, have shown in practice that they go along with US schemes. The Europeans are duplicitous and they cannot be trusted. In fact it seems to me that as far as Venezuela is concerned, the Americans, the Europeans and the Zionists all covet Venezuela's oil and gas, and as such they are partners in crime in Venezuela."

Turning to Iran's nuclear deal with world powers, the Joint Comprehensive Plan Of Action (JCPOA), the senior MP criticised the Europeans for not honouring their promises. Naghavi Hosseini said: "After the US walked away from the JCPOA, the Europeans claimed they were independent, and vowed not to follow the US and stick to the nuclear deal. But in practice this did not happen. A case in point being Europe's much-vaunted independent financial mechanism for trade with Iran, known as SPV. The Europeans have on three occasions declared a launch date for SPV ,but the mechanism never became operational and we are still waiting for the launch of SPV. This shows that we shouldn't rely on the Europeans. They are not trustworthy."
