A senior Iranian judge and former deputy to Ayatollah Shahroudi has said the "advanced" nature of Islamic Penal Code of Iran, based on Shiite jurisprudence, astonished Saudi judicial authorities.

Iran PressIran news: Hojjat-ol-Eslam Abbas Ali Alizadeh, a senior Judge of Iran's Supreme Court and former deputy of Ayatollah Seyyed Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, the late chairman of the Expediency Council, in an exclusive interview with Iran Press added one of Ayatollah Shahroudi's services and great achievements was the reform and enforcement of the Islamic penal code.

Hojjat-ol-Eslam Alizadeh, on the sidelines of the ceremony commemorating Ayatollah Shahroudi in Tehran's Arg Mosque on Saturday added during the drafting of this law, Ayatollah Shahroudi convened a conference and invited experts and judicial authorities from Islamic countries including Egypt, Syria, Kuwait, Iraq and Saudi Arabia to attend the conference.

Senior judge Alizadeh added: "The draft penal code was based on Shiite jurisprudence, and copies of it were distributed among the guests during the conference."

The senior judiciary officials said the former Saudi minister of fatwa, "Al Sheikh", after studying the draft, went to Ayatollah Shahroudi and expressed his surprise at the "advanced" nature of Shiite jurisprudence in the Islamic Penal Code.

According to Hojjat-ol-Eslam Alizadeh, Al-Sheikh added, "I did not think that Shiite jurisprudence was so rich."

Ayatollah Shahroudi was born in Iraq's Najaf, in 1948 and had served as a member of the Guardian Council since 1994. He was also a former judiciary chief, and a member of Experts Council. As of 2017, he was also the chairman of the Expediency Council.
