Senior Iranian officials have expressed their condolences following the passing away of the Head of Iran’s Expediency Council, Ayatollah Seyyed Mahmoud Hashemi-Shahroudi.

Iran Press/Iran news: Senior Iranian officials, including the speaker of Iran's parliament, Ali Larijani,  foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, and head of judiciary, Ayatollah Sadegh Amoli Larijani, have expressed their condolences following the passing away of the Head of Iran’s Expediency Council, Ayatollah Seyyed Mahmoud Hashemi-Shahroudi.

In his condolence message Ali Larijani said Ayatollah Hashemi-Shahroudi, in addition to being a prominent religious scholar who was taught by such figures as Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Abol-Qasem Khoie , and Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Mohammad Bagher Sadr, provided an invaluable service to public and to the Islamic establishment as head of Iran's judiciary, as a member and vice president of Iran’s Assembly of Experts, and in more recent years as Head of Iran's Expediency Council, Iran Press reported.

In his condolence message Iran's foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif highlighted the fact that Ayatollah Hashemi-Shahroudi served the public and the Islamic Republic, and was a source of blessing and charitable work, during his time as a member and vice president of Iran’s Assembly of Experts, as a member of the Guardian Council, as the head of Iran's judiciary, and as head of Iran's Expediency Council.

Meanwhile, the current head of Iran's Judiciary, Ayatollah Sadegh Amoli Larijani, also expressed his condolences on the passing away of one of his predecessors, saying: "Ayatollah Hashemi-Shahroudi was a learned religious scholar of outstanding ability, who did much to foster unity and cohesion during his time in the Assembly of Experts, and the Guardian Council, and brought about many positive changes and innovations during his leadership of the judiciary, heading the judicial branch of the government.

Head of Iran’s Expediency Council, Ayatollah Seyyed Mahmoud Hashemi-Shahroudi, passed away on Monday at the age of 70 after months of suffering acute ill health. 

The prominent religious and political figure succumbed to renal and intestinal malfunctions at Tehran's Khatam al-Anbiya Hospital.
