Oil minister, Bijan Zangeneh

Iran's oil minister, Bijan Zangeneh, visited Moscow on Monday in an unexpected and unannounced visit.

According to an Iran Press report, immediately after arrival in Moscow Zangeneh had a meeting with the Russian energy minister, Alexander Novak. The meeting took place behind closed doors.

Speaking to reporters and journalists after the meeting, Novak said: "Russian and Iranian officials are constantly in touch, and this helps strengthen commercial, economic and business ties between the two countries, particularly with regards to energy, oil and gas.

Novak added: "With one million barrels per day added to the global oil production output, we hope this would be sufficient to clam down the market and stabilize oil prices."

The Russian energy minister went on to emphasize the need for all OPEC and non-OPEC countries to abide by their production ceilings and not to go above those ceilings. Novak said: "If producing countries abide by their production quotas, then the oil market will be stable, and this will be in the interest of everyone, including oil-consuming nations, oil-producing nations, and investors."

Novak added: "The most important issue for us to be concerned about is how to calm down the oil markets, avoiding turmoil, and at the same time meeting the growing energy needs of the world."

For his part, Iran's oil minister, Bijan Zangeneh said "The two sides discussed a range of issues including Tehran-Moscow cooperation in oil and gas sector, issues relating to the global oil market, and OPEC production quotas."
