Mashhad (IP) - Tasu'a mourning ceremony kicks off in the shrine of Imam Reza (PBUH) in Mashhad, the capital of Khorasan Razavi province, northeast of Iran.

Iran Press/Iran newsTasu'a is the ninth day of Muharram and the day before Ashura.

This day is devoted to Abbas ibn Ali, Imam Hussein's half-brother, because of his bravery in the battle of Karbala. 

Shia Muslims hold ceremonies every year in the month of Muharram to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (PBUH) and his faithful companions.

The third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (PBUH), and 72 of his faithful companions were martyred on the Day of Ashura in the year 680 AD. 205/218
