Iran Press/Iran news: Speaking on Monday in a meeting at Iran's foreign ministry with Mohammad Javad Zarif, the Iranian parliament (Majlis) speaker, Ali Larijani, thanked the minister for his tireless efforts in diplomacy, and for his many outstanding achievements for the Islamic Republic and the Islamic Revolution.
Larijani described Zarif as an intelligent, highly experienced and seasoned diplomat who was defending the national interests of Iran on a global stage. Larijani added: "Your diplomacy has been very effective, so effective in fact, that the enemies of the Iranian nation can no longer tolerate you, and have decided to sanction you."
In further remarks, Ali Larijani said: "You are the official responsible for Iran's foreign policy, and you have defended Iran's national interests with authority, determination, seriousness, and vigilance."
For his part, Iranian foreign minister thanked the speaker of the Parliament for attending the meeting at the foreign ministry and vowed to defend Iran's national interests and the rights of the Iranian people with all his might.
It is worth noting that last week, the US Treasury Department added foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif's name to the list of individuals sanctioned by the Trump Administration.
The international community, by and large, rejected the US move, with the European Union emphasizing the need to keep diplomatic channels open with Iran, and to engage diplomatically with Iran.
The decision to impose sanctions on Zarif strikes at the main diplomatic channel between Iran and the West.
