France, Germany demand stop Turkish military offensive in north-east Syria: French FM

French Minister for Foreign Affairs said his country and also Germany are against current Turkish offensive in north-east Syria as he arrived for a meeting with his EU counterparts in Luxembourg.

Iran Press/Europe: On arrival at the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg on 14 October, French Minister for Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves le Drian expressed concerns on the current Turkish offensive in north-east Syria.

European Union foreign ministers must again condemn Turkey’s offensive in Syria and call for an arms embargo on Ankara, France’s top diplomat said on Monday.

"This offensive is going to cause serious humanitarian devastation," Jean-Yves Le Drian said as he arrived for a meeting with his EU counterparts in Luxembourg.

The report came after Italy, the top arms exporter to Turkey last year, joined a ban on selling weapons and ammunition to Ankara after a weekend decision by France and Germany to suspend sales, and Spain signalled it was ready to do so.

Turkish forces launched a cross-border offensive against Kurdish fighters in north Syria after US President Donald Trump pulled American troops out of the area.

Thousands of civilians have fled the violence and many people are sheltering in schools or other buildings in Hassakeh city and the town of Tal Tamer.
