The Malian army said that fifty-three Malian soldiers were killed in a militant attack on a military position in northern Mali on Friday.

Iran Press/Africa: “The provisional toll has increased to 53 killed on the side of the Malian armed forces,” the army said in a post on its Facebook page, cautioning that the death toll was provisional.

A civilian was also killed at the outpost in Indelimane, in the Menaka region, close to the border with Niger, the country's communication minister Yaya Sangare said on Twitter according to France 24.

"The situation is under control. A search and the process of identifying the bodies is continuing," he added, after giving the latest update on the death toll. 

He said 10 survivors were found at the outpost, which suffered "significant" damage.
