At least 60 people were killed, including nine children, after a head-on collision between two buses in central Ghana.

Iran Press/Africa: A head-on collision involving two vehicles took place on the Kintampo-Techiman highway near Kintampo, The Guardian reported.

Local media reported one of the drivers lost control over his vehicle after falling asleep.

The road is one of the main routes in and out of the town of Kintampo, around 270 miles north of the capital Accra.

"Most of the passengers in both vehicles died at the spot. A number of them with varying degrees of injuries have been rushed to the hospital," a police spokesperson told reporters.

The police commander, Joseph Antwi Gyawu, said: "The vehicles were traveling in separate directions when the collision occurred."

One of the buses involved in collision caught fire, the police said.

Crashes are common on highways in Ghana because of poor maintenance, disregard for traffic regulations and unroadworthy vehicles. An average of six people die on the country’s roads every day, according to the Ghanaian police’s motor transport and traffic directorate.103/209
