Tehran (IP)- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif condemned new US sanctions against a number of Iranian banks.

Iran Press/Iran news: On his Twitter account on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif condemned new US sanctions against Iranian banks, describing them as an attempt to destroy the remaining food and medicine payment channels amid the coronavirus outbreak.

"The US regime intends to destroy our remaining financial channels of payment for food and medicine in the midst of the global coronavirus pandemic," Zarif added.

The Iranian Foreign Minister further emphasized: "Iranians will endure this new oppression too, but plotting to starve a society is a crime against humanity."

Zarif also warned that the perpetrators of this oppressive act will be brought to justice.

The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions against 18 Iranian banks on Thursday evening (Tehran time).

Following its illegal withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on May 8, 2018, the United States has launched a comprehensive campaign to put pressure on Iran.

Washington has said the goal of the "maximum pressure campaign" against Iran is to reach a new agreement with Tehran that addresses all issues that the US is concerned about.

The move by President Donald Trump's administration has drawn widespread domestic and international condemnation.

The Islamic Republic of Iran, as a key member of the Resistance Front, has a key role to play in countering US-Zionist conspiracies and actions in the region.
