Iran Press/ Iran news: During his visit to Tehran, UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg met with Ali Asghar Khaji, Senior Assistant to the Iranian Foreign Minister on Special Political Affairs, to discuss various issues and dimensions of the Yemeni crisis.
During the meeting, Ali Asghar Khaji also assessed the role of the United Nations in the Yemeni crisis, stressing that confidence-building must be accompanied by practical measures, especially in humanitarian affairs.
Khaji announced Iran's support for any UN effort to resolve the Yemeni crisis. The Special Envoy also added that he was currently evaluating different points of view and intended to consider the concerns of various Yemeni groups in his plans while at the same time pursuing his short-term priorities within the framework of long-term goals.
Saudi Arabia, backed by the US and regional allies, including UAE, launched a war on Yemen in March 2015 to bring the government of former Yemeni president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi back to power and crush the Ansarullah movement.
The war has left hundreds of thousands of Yemenis dead and displaced millions more. It has also destroyed Yemen's infrastructure and spread famine and infectious diseases.
