Iran Press/America: The second session in the impeachment trial of US President Donald Trump concluded Wednesday (January 22) with Trump's lawyer saying afterward there is "not a doubt" that he will be acquitted.
During the session, Democrats accused Trump of a corrupt scheme to pressure Ukraine to help him get re-elected and warned that America's global prestige would suffer if the U.S. Senate acquits him, Reuters reported.
Representative Adam B. Schiff of California, the lead House prosecutor, took the lectern in the chamber as senators sat silently preparing to weigh Trump’s fate. Speaking in an even, measured manner, he accused the president of a corrupt scheme to pressure Ukraine for help “to cheat” in the 2020 presidential election.
The Republican Trump, who has denied wrongdoing, sounded a defiant note, telling reporters in Switzerland the Democrats did not have enough evidence to find him guilty and remove him from office.
The Democratic team pressed its case against Trump in eight hours of arguments, which will resume on Thursday.
Democratic Senator Michael Bennet, who is running for President, said he believed that voters will pressure their senators to demand that evidence and witnesses be allowed in the trial as Democrats have demanded.
Wednesday's session was the second day in the Senate trial after the House impeached Trump last month for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. House Democrats charge that the President abused his office by withholding US security aid and a White House meeting while pressuring Ukraine to investigate his political rivals, and then covered it up by obstructing the impeachment inquiry.
