US demands dismissal of Iran's complaint over Treaty of Amity

US government lawyers on Monday called on judges at the International Court of Justice to dismiss Iran's complaint against Washington under the Treaty of Amity.

Iran PressEurope: Mark String, a US government attorney, at a hearing on Washington's objection to Iran's lawsuit against the United States in violation of the 1955 Treaty of Amity, called Iran's move to sue the United States under the Treaty of Amity a mistake.

String claimed that the main purpose of Iran's complaint is to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), from which the US government withdrew illegally in 2018.

Hearings on the US protest at the International Court of Justice will begin on Monday, September 14 and will continue until September 21.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) reviewed Iran's request in 2018 and ordered the United States to lift sanctions on humanitarian, pharmaceutical, agricultural and aviation items, but Washington has ignored the ruling.

In a petition to the International Court of Justice, Iran called US anti-Iranian sanctions a violation of the 1955 Treaty of Amity and called for them to be lifted.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has filed another complaint with the International Court of Justice regarding the seizure of $ 2 billion in assets of the Central Bank of Iran in the United States.

On Tuesday, May 8, 2018, US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the internationally recognized agreement, JCPOA, and announced the return of nuclear sanctions in violation of Washington's commitments under the nuclear deal.

Trump's move has drawn widespread domestic and international condemnation.
