Iran Press /Europe: UK Parliament adopted a measure that aims to force a delay in a definitive vote on Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal with the European Union.
British lawmakers on Saturday derailed Johnson’s plan to push his Brexit deal through Parliament, voting in favor of an amendment that aims to put off the moment of the decision until they have had more time to scrutinize his plan.
According to the Iran Press, the House of Commons' Twitter account has clarified that the law mandates the Prime Minister to request a Brexit delay.
The House of Commons has approved the amended motion on the new Brexit deal agreed between the UK Government and the EU. The Government must ask for an extension of Article 50 under the Benn Act and set out how it intends to proceed.
"Today is a historic day for Parliament," said Jeremy Corbyn, the Labour leader, adding that MPs "will not be blackmailed by the Prime Minister."
Boris Johnson signals he may ignore the law forcing him to delay Brexit.
"Alas, the opportunity to have a meaningful vote has effectively been passed up," Boris Johnson says in Parliament, after losing the vote on Oliver Letwin's amendment. "The meaningful vote has been voided of meaning." 101/212
