Trump impeachment: Democrats reps. make constitutional case

The US House Judiciary Committee Democrats offered interpretations of the Constitution for removing a president from office as they move toward drafting articles for Trump’s impeachment.

Iran Press/America:  A report by the judiciary committee setting out the legal and historical basis for impeachment comes ahead of Monday's public hearing to consider evidence against the US President Donald Trump. A vote on articles of impeachment could be held as early as next week.

After emerging from an all-day closed-door meeting, the US House Judiciary Committee Democratic lawmakers said they were still in the process of drafting formal charges, known as articles of impeachment, that the panel could recommend for a full House vote as early as Thursday.

The US congress representative Jamie Raskin told reporters on Saturday evening the committee had spent the day digesting the information they received from the House Intelligence Committee and constitutional law scholars who testified before Congress on Wednesday. "So now we are in the process of putting the law and the facts together to begin to think about the next step," he said.

The lawmakers released a 55-page report on Saturday morning outlining what they see as the constitutional grounds on which articles of impeachment could be built.

On Saturday Trump again described the process as a "witch-hunt".

The impeachment process began in September after an anonymous whistleblower complained to the US Congress about a July phone call by Trump to the president of Ukraine, in which the US president appeared to tie US military assistance to Ukraine launching investigations that would help him politically.
