Thousands of workers and trade union members gathered in Kartal, Istanbul, on Sunday, to protest against the Turkish economic crisis and ask for higher minimum salaries.

Iran PressAsia: The demonstrators marched through streets holding banners and signs, with several speakers addressing the crowd from a stage.

Metalworker Cemal commented that his salary had 'halved' since the beginning of 2021, and stated that workers now have 'no purchasing power.'

The rally was organized by the Confederation of Revolutionary Worker's Trade Unions of Turkey (DISK), who demanded that the minimum wage be raised to 5,200 liras (331 euros) per month.

Turkey has experienced economic issues since 2018 when the country went into recession. Both currency and inflation issues worsened as the country's economy was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
