Syrian Foreign Minister arrived in Tunisia on Monday night to strengthen bilateral relations and joint cooperation.

Iran PressAfrica:  The Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday night the expected visit of Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mekdad noting this visit happens "in the context of the desire to return bilateral relations to their normal routine".

A ministry statement on Sunday said that Mekdad’s 3-day visit comes upon an invitation from Tunisian Foreign Minister Nabil Ammar.

The visit will be the first by a Syrian official to Tunisia since the two countries severed their relations in 2011.

On Wednesday, Tunisia said Syria will reopen its embassy and name an ambassador to Tunisia. The move followed a decision by Tunisian President Kais Saied to name an ambassador to Damascus.

Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mekdad, who is currently in Tunisia, went to Algeria on a three-day official visit last Saturday and is scheduled to go to Iraq after Tunisia. 219
