Pro-Palestine protesters at Columbia University reclaimed Butler Library and called for it to be renamed the Basel Al-Araj Popular University.

Why it matters:

The Israeli genocide in Gaza is so horrendous that despite the U.S. government suppression of the protests against Israel, especially protests springing out of the U.S. universities, the wave is getting spread steadily.

The big picture:

Pro-Palestine protesters held a gathering in New York on Wednesday, outside the library, showing support for the people of Gaza under Israeli blockade and strike. They also called on the university to divest from the companies that have ties with the Israeli regime.  NYPD showed up outside and on campus to repress protesters.

State of play:

The NYPD attacked demonstrators flooding Columbia in defense of the Basel Al-Araj Popular University.

  • Fire alarms are going off, they have trapped them inside the school, and sealed off all entrances
  • These are pro-Palestine protesters from Columbia University protesting Israel's new plans to seize Gaza.

Context:

Gaza has been deprived of food for over 60 days. Every day, there are new images of emaciated Palestinian children starving to death. Meanwhile, if anybody protests against genocide, Columbia University will punish them.
