Syrian President, in an interview with Russia Today, described Iran's relations with his country as based on the relations between the two independent countries and said Iran is an important country.

Iran PressMiddle East: Syrian President Bashar al-Assad also said that Tehran-Damascus relations have nothing to do with other countries.

In response to a question about balancing relations with Iran, the Syrian president stressed that Syria's relations with any country are not subject to discussion with anyone.  No one decides for Syria with whom it can and cannot have ties.  No one decides for us, nor do we settle for anyone else.  No one interferes in our decisions, nor do we interfere in anyone else's.

Bashar al-Assad added: "Many countries that used to raise this issue in the past had not done so for years because they are engaged with Iran, which is a contradiction. Also, Iran is an important country.  We need relations with all these countries to talk about stability in the Middle East.  But, the principle is wrong if we want to discuss the balance between concerns."

The Syrian president referred to some talks between Saudi Arabia and Iran and said that currently, there is a dialogue between some Persian Gulf states and Iran, and we view this positively, independent of our relations with these countries.

Earlier, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said his army has foiled Western attempts to overthrow his government thanks to assistance from allies including Russia, Iran, and Lebanon's Hezbollah movement.

Assad said during a televised address on August 20, 2017, that Iran's direct support to Syria, politically, economically, and militarily, made possible and more considerable advances for the Syrian army on the battlefield and in the fight against terrorists led by Western Countries countries and the United States.
