Iran Press/America: US Senators on Wednesday acquitted Donald Trump of two impeachment charges in a near party-line vote that closed the curtain on the third presidential impeachment trial in US history.
“As the president's impeachment trial began, Republican senators pledged an oath to defend the Constitution,” Clinton tweeted on Wednesday.
“Today, 52 of them voted to betray that oath—and all of us. We’re entering dangerous territory for our democracy. It’ll take all of us working together to restore it.”
US President Donald Trump was acquitted on Wednesday 5 February in Senate impeachment trial, saved by fellow Republicans who rallied to protect him nine months before he asks voters in a deeply divided America to give him a second White House term.
While several Republican senators acknowledged the president’s wrongdoing, nearly all of them eventually voted to acquit Trump of both articles. Senator Mitt Romney, ultimately, was the only senator to break with his party and vote to convict on the abuse of power charge.
As a result, the vote on the two articles was slightly different. Senators voted 52-48 to acquit the US president on abuse of power, and 53-47 to acquit him of obstruction of Congress.
By the conclusion of the trial, many Senate Republicans were no longer denying the president’s wrongdoing.
The acquittal is the third time in the US history the Senate has acquitted a president who has previously been impeached, after Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Clinton in 1999.
