Former US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman

Former US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman said Iranian President Hassan Rouhani did not agree with a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump after he noticed it was going to be an empty one.

Iran Press/America: "Rouhani saw the empty photo op [between Trump and North Korean leader] and wouldn't go for a phone op," the former chief nuclear negotiator with Iran posted in her twitter account on Monday.

"Iran and NK watch each other," added Sherman who negotiated with Iran under democratic President Barack Obama, "Real negotiations needed in both."

Sherman's comments came after North Korea said it was not "interested" in further meetings with US and Iran resumed its enrichment for peaceful purposes following unilateral withdrawal of US in 2018 from an internationally supported nuclear agreement reached in 2015.

Observers said republican President Donald Trump stepped out of the deal only because it was made when Obama was in the office and did not have his government's signature.

Rouhani has rejected Trump's repeated calls for a bilateral meeting stating that US has first to lift sanctions it has re-imposed on Iran.
