Iran Press/ Europe: Hundreds of demonstrators marched across the capital to demand that President Alexander Lukashenko step down. They were blocked by police, who rounded up some and forced others to disperse.
More than 30 demonstrators were detained, the Vesna human rights center, unregistered by the republic’s authorities, said.
Most of the detentions were made in the capital, Minsk.
Unauthorized opposition rallies have been continuing in Belarus for more than two months since the 9 August presidential elections in the country, following which Alexander Lukashenko declared victory in seeking a sixth term.
According to the final data of the Central Election Commission, incumbent President Lukashenko won 80.1 percent of the vote. Svetlana Tikhanovskaya who was considered as his key rival garnered 10.12 percent of the vote. However, she did not recognize the outcome of the polls and initiated setting up the Belarusian Opposition Coordination Council, which declared measures to provide for power transfer as its main goal.
