Morocco has officially submitted its bid to join the BRICS grouping — or Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Iran PressAfrica: The Kingdom of Morocco has joined several other nations, such as Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Iran, Argentina, and Egypt, to secure a position in the economic alliance.

The upcoming summit in South Africa will bring together around 60 heads of state and will set expansionary standards for possible new BRICS members. However, as per Coin Gape, the final decision on which countries will join the grouping will probably be deferred.

The term BRIC was coined by Goldman Sachs economist Jim O’Neill in 2001 to describe the startling rise of Brazil, Russia, India, and China.

The BRICS powers had their first summit in 2009 in Russia. South Africa joined in 2010. All BRICS member states have full sovereignty and their own foreign political interests and priorities. Mutual respect and mutual benefit are the foundation for dialogue and development within BRICS.

Iran and Argentina applied to join the BRICS bloc after the summit in Ashgabat in June 2022.

"Iran will be able to contribute to the BRICS' operation and benefit the organization." Argentina's President Alberto Fernandez also said at a BRICS+ meeting in Ashgabat that his country wants to become a full member of BRICS.

Following the approval of Iran as a full-fledged member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), a political advisor to the Iranian President says that being a member of BRICS will be the next step in Iran's foreign policy.

"Based on the doctrine of neighborhood and convergence, active membership in regional and international organizations is an important part of President Raeisi's foreign policy. Full membership in Shanghai Cooperation Organization has been successfully finalized. The next step is [being a member of] BRICS," said Mohammad Jamshidi.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian told a press conference in Cape Town, South Africa, on June 2, 2023, that BRICS has welcomed Iran’s membership in the bloc.

“Given Iran’s geopolitical situation and potential, the main members of BRICS welcomed our country’s membership in this group,” Amir Abdollahian said after the Friends of BRICS meeting was concluded, the Tehran Times’ correspondent accompanying the minister said.

He noted that Iran’s membership is “seriously considered” by the five countries.
