editor-in-chief of Al-Rai al-Youm:
Saraqib's liberation changed political, military equations in favor of Syria
Tehran (IP) - Abdel Bari Atwan, editor-in-chief of London-based newspaper Al-Rai al-Youm in an editorial on Tuesday described the liberation of Syria's Saraqib city as a 'military breakthrough' that changed all political and military equations of the current crisis in Syria.
Iran Press/ Middle East: Syrian army forces seized a strategic position in the northwestern city of Saraqib on Monday after fierce fighting with militias, led by the Turkish-backed Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (former Al-Nusra Front).
Atwan said: "The militias' control over the city lasted only three days; in other words, the Syrian army reached a new record in pushing back terrorists and reopening two international roads between Damascus and Aleppo and Aleppo and Latakia.
"The Syrian army was able to protect all the liberated cities and towns and villages in the area of more than 600 square kilometers in the last few weeks with Russian support," he added.
The prominent political analyst on the Arab world referred to the arrival of 1000 Hezbollah fighters to Saraqib as their immediate contributors to the conflict was the cause of disruption of equations and the achievement of this victory, as they were able to contribute to release the 'al-Qusayr' region in western Syria near the Lebanese border in 2015.
Atwan pointed to the recapture of the strategic town of Saraqib as the first military and political defeat of Turkey's Operation Spring Shield, saying the Syrian army had in fact given a decisive and shocking response to Erdogan's ultimatum by releasing Saraqib.
According to the report, all the achievements of the Turkish army in the last few days are small compared to the significance of the liberation of Saraqib and the defeat of the militias in the city, as this victory unprecedentedly heightened the morale of the Syrian army and its allies.
