The European Union must take measures to protect core provisions of the nuclear deal with Iran, EU Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker said on Saturday.

Speaking to the Hannoversche Allgemeine newspaper Juncker said: "The termination of the Iran agreement by the US doesn’t benefit global peace."

He said the 2015 pact should not be sacrificed for the sake of US domestic political expediency. "The Middle East is on the cusp of great turmoil. And we are close," he cautioned.

US President Donald Trump announced on May 8 that Washington was walking away from the nuclear agreement, which was reached between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the US, Britain, France, Russia and China - plus Germany.

Since the US president pulled Washington out of the historic nuclear deal, European countries have been scrambling to ensure that Iran gets enough economic benefits to persuade it to stay in the deal.

Iranian lawmakers have submitted a double-urgency bill to the Presiding Board of Majlis (parliament) on the nuclear talks with the EU. The double-urgency bill on requirements of nuclear talks with the European Union countries is complementary to the bill on reciprocal measures against US anti-Iran moves, Chairman of Majlis Nuclear Committee Mojtaba Zonnouri said on Friday.

According to the bill, the Iranian government has to ask for reliable guarantees from the Europeans and the members of the P5+1 group of nations, except for the United States
