Iran Press/ Iran News: The Kajaki Dam is located on the Helmand River about 161 km northwest of Kandahar.
The Helmand River originates in the Hindu Kush Mountains near Afghanistan's capital Kabul and runs more than 1,100 km south before flowing into Hamoun wetlands in Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan Province.
The Iranian Space Agency announced last month that satellite photos showed the Taliban has altered the river's route in order to prevent it from reaching Iran.
On Friday night, the special representative of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hassan Kazemi Qoumi, and the head of the Iranian Embassy in Kabul told in an interview with IRIB about the Taliban's adherence to the Helmand Water Treaty that the Taliban allowed Iranian experts to visit the Kajaki Dam.
On the sidelines of the Afghanistan Special Conference at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI), Taliban's Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi said that Afghanistan affirms its commitment to the treaty and never wants to create problems for Iran.
According to the Afghan-Iranian Helmand River-Water Treaty of 1973 signed by the then officials of Iran and Afghanistan, Iran's share of Helmand River water is 820 million cubic meters per year and about 26 cubic meters per second, which varies in different months and seasons.
The previous government of Afghanistan affirmed commitment to the Helmand Treaty but instead, it built the Kamal Khan Dam in Nimruz province on the Helmand River and prevented the implementation of the agreement, which caused damage to human, animal, and plant life around the Helmand River in Sistan and Baluchestan province Iran.
In recent years, the Helmand Treaty has been one of the most important challenges between Iran and Afghanistan. And the Iranian side has emphasized the need to respect Iran's rights to the Helmand River Treaty.
According to the Afghan side, drought in Afghanistan is the reason for not fulfilling its commitment to the treaty, where the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ebrahim Raisi, during his trip to Sistan and the Baluchestan province of Iran, said that commitment to the treaty would depend on the examination of Iranian experts.
