Tehran (IP) - The Foreign Ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran has warned the European Union against adopting measures that complicate the management of relations between the two sides and have a negative effect on the process of cooperation, including in negotiations to lift sanctions.

Iran PressIran news: In a statement on Thursday, the Ministry stated, "The Islamic Republic of Iran considers the decision of the European Union and the EU3 to not fulfill their commitments on the 8th anniversary of the signing of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as illegal and contrary to their commitments under the deal and UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and an act of ill will that causes tension in the relations between the two sides."

"The Islamic Republic of Iran took compensatory steps in response to the illegal withdrawal of the United States from the JCPOA and the reimposition of oppressive sanctions and in accordance with its rights under Articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA, and these steps are fully in accordance with the procedures contained in the JCPOA," the statement said.

The statement said, "The decision of the European Troika to not fulfill their obligations in response to Iran's peaceful nuclear programs is completely contrary to legal logic. Iran gave the European parties a one-year deadline to compensate for the illegal action of the United States in withdrawing from the JCPOA, and after that, it gradually started its compensatory steps to provide the European parties with the opportunity to compensate and maintain the window of diplomacy."

"Therefore, it is not acceptable that the European Union and the EU3 describe this illegal action as a reaction to Iran's actions, which were completely legal in response to the withdrawal of the United States and the inaction of the European Union and the EU3. Iran's actions are completely permissible from a legal point of view, and the Europeans themselves have acknowledged it."

"These actions of the European parties will definitely have negative effects on the efforts to manage the tension and create a suitable environment for more cooperation between the JCPOA parties."

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has always looked at the other participants' deeds not words. This action of the European parties is inconsistent with their claim of trying to create the necessary space to revive the JCPOA."

The statement emphasized, "Without an iota of doubt, the Islamic Republic of Iran will respond appropriately and within the framework of its rights to this illegal, provocative act that is a clear violation of the obligations of the European Union, France, Germany, and the UK under the JCPOA and UN Security Council Resolution 2231."

"We warn the European Union against adopting measures that complicate the management of relations between the two sides and have a negative effect on the process of cooperation, including in negotiations to lift sanctions," concluded the statement.

In a joint statement on Thursday, the E3 said they would retain their sanctions in a “direct response to Iran’s allegedly consistent and severe noncompliance” with the JCPOA.
