Iran Bagheri meets Bashar al-Assad in Damascus

The Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who has traveled to Syria, met and held talks with the Syrian President and said that the two countries could increase bilateral cooperation.

Iran PressMiddle East: Chief of General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, in a meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Thursday, said that Tehran attaches significance to the importance of strengthening relations between the two friendly countries in various fields due to the mutual interests for the nations of Iran and Syria.

Referring to the signing of a military cooperation agreement between Tehran and Damascus, Bashar al-Assad said: "This agreement reflects the level of strategic relations between Syria and Iran and is the result of years of joint activities and cooperation to fight terrorists in Syria."

The Comprehensive Agreement on Military Cooperation between Iran and Syria was signed in Damascus on Wednesday at the end of talks between Maj. Gen. Bagheri and Lt. Gen. Deputy Commander of the Syrian Armed Forces and the Syrian Minister of Defense Ali Abdullah Ayyoub.

Heading a delegation, the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran arrived in Damascus last Tuesday at the invitation of the Syrian Defense Minister.

Earlier at the 6th tripartite summit of the Astana Peace Process on July 1, 2020, with the participation of the Presidents of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Russian Federation, and the Republic of Turkey, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani condemned any sanctions against any nations in the world, especially Syria, saying that Iran will continue to support the Syrian government and people with greater vigor.
