Iran Press/ Iran News: Regarding the issue, Saeed Khatibzadeh said when this ambiguity was raised for the first time, we answered that the original news of the candidacy of the Islamic Republic of Iran was incorrect, but due to the news being raised again, we stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran has not applied for a non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council (UNSC) for 2022-2024 and the UAE had been the only candidate from the Asian group.
The spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs added: "Considering that the election of non-permanent members of the UN Security Council is done by secret and in-person voting (ballot paper), the intention of the country that secretly voted for the Islamic Republic of Iran is not clear; of course, it is not ruled out that this was done with mischievous intent."
Khatibzadeh went on to stress Iran's support for the UAE as a non-permanent member of the UNSC and has voted in favor of it.
He said the subject has been also announced in a letter by the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to his UAE counterpart.
