Tehran (IP) - The Iranian Foreign Minister says the Islamic Republic of Iran is independent in foreign policy and acts based on its national interest.

Iran PressIran news: Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Minister of Foreign Affairs, made the remarks on Tuesday in a symposium on balanced foreign policy at Imam Khomeini’s school, which was held at the mausoleum of Imam Khomeini.

He referred to the foreign policy doctrine of the Raisi administration and said: “In the political thought of the late Imam Khomeini, since the opposition to capitulation was raised, the issue has been the denial of hegemony and domination, which has been well managed during the past four decades.”

He said the “Neither East nor West” slogan does not mean seeking isolation and distance from East and West, but the main goal is not to depend on East and West, and after achieving this approach, looking at Asia with the priority of neighbors was put on the agenda.

“Of course, there were criticisms that you are moving the country towards China and Russia, so after the war in Ukraine, during my visit to Moscow, I explicitly stated the Iranian position to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, saying that the Islamic Republic of Iran is independent in foreign policy. It acts based on its national interest,” Amir-Abdollahian noted.

Iran adheres to commitments

He said: “The previous administration accepted the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), but the new administration never said we will not accept JCPOA and talk about a new agreement. Some of our critics say why do you want to go back to the JCPOA? Adherence to commitments is on our agenda.”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs further addressed the White House, saying: “The talks that have stalled in Vienna are due to the issue of sanctions, most of which are unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States, and our talks continue through the exchange of messages and non-paper.”

Amir-Abdollahian said: “Our negotiations are underway through the representative of the European Union and every week one or two messages are exchanged indirectly through Europe to remove obstacles and how to lift sanctions.”

US sought direct conversation with Iran’s FM

“Less than three months ago, when I was in Munich, senior US officials were interested in having a direct conversation with me so that we could clear the way for negotiations and move forward,” he said. “In order for us to respond to the other side, the first point we made was that the American side must show in practice that its path is different from the path of former US President Donald Trump.”

Amir-Abdollahian stated that one of Imam Khomeini’s recommendations to the foreign policy apparatus is adherence to international agreements and commitments. “In the Vienna talks, where there was a pause, talks were held through messages, the main topic of which is US sanctions, our talks are going on through the European Union’s coordinator of the talks in Vienna Enrique Mora, and in less than a week or two ago, one or two messages were exchanged between us and the United States to clear up ambiguities.”
