The Iran men's national football team, domestically known as Team Melli, has started its campaign at the 2018 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup in Russia with a remarkable victory over Morocco.

Morocco's own goal gave Iran the win and a crucial three points to start Group B play.

After an exhausting game, Iran won its World Cup opener against Morocco on Friday in St. Petersburg, 1-0, thanks to an own goal in added time.

The substitute Bouhaddouz scored past his own goalkeeper with a near post header as he attempted to defend the free-kick taken by Ehsan Hajsafi.

Morocco became the second Middle East country to yield a late winning goal on Friday, after Egypt lost 1-0 to Uruguay in Group A, due to a last-minute header from Jose Gimenez.
