Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and prime minister of the Taliban-ruled government in Afghanistan Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund met in Kabul, discussing bilateral relation and settlement of disputes.

Why It Matters:

Leading a high-ranking delegation, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, arrived in Kabul on Sunday for a one-day visit to Afghanistan, marking the first visit by an Iranian foreign minister since the Taliban took power in 2021.

Over the past decade, among other issues, tensions between Iran and Afghanistan have escalated over the management of shared water resources, particularly in the Harirud Basin. This international water basin, shared by Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkmenistan, is crucial for supporting livelihoods and agriculture in the region.

What They Are Saying:

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said, “Iran’s security and stability are dependent on the security and stability of Afghanistan.”

Araghchi reiterated that the two issues of the Afghan refugees in Iran and the water dispute “should turn into factors for expanding cooperation.”

Akhund, for his part, urged an increase in official visits between the two countries to strengthen diplomatic, political, and economic relations between the two Muslim and brotherly nations.

Key Points:

  • Iran respects Afghanistan's sovereignty and independence.
  • Iran should receive an annual share of 820 million cubic meters from Hirmand under the previous accord.
  • Bolstering bilateral cooperation
