Tehran's Arbaeen walk 'for those who have been left behind' got underway on Tuesday morning, with huge crowds walking the 17 kilometres distance from the starting point, Imam Hussein square, to the Holy shrine of Hazrat Abdol Azim Hassani (peace be upon him) in Shahr Rey in south Tehran.

Iran news: According to an Iran Press report, huge numbers of mourners are taking part in the walk which passes through some of Tehran's main squares, streets and boulevards, such as "Shohada" square, "Khorasan" square, 17th Shahrivar street, "Shoush" square, Fadaeeyan-e-Islam Street, and "Shahr-e-Rey" square.

Tehran's Arbaeen walk started on Tuesday morning and it is expected the mourners will reach Hazrat Abdol Azim Hassani's shrine in time for mid-day and afternoon prayers at the Holy shrine.

According to Saeed Ohadi, the head of the cultural artistic organization of Tehran municipal council, the marchers and mourners will be able to use free public transport, including the metro and bus service, to get back to Tehran.

Dozens of resting stations (known as Moukab) have beebn set up along the route of the walk, where mourners receive refreshments of various kind.

Every year millions of Iranians travel to the holy cities of Iraq to make an Arbaeen pilgrimage. This year Arbaeen falls on October 30. 

While the province of Karbala has the capacity to host 1.2 million pilgrims, the current number of travelers would impact on plans to provide services to the pilgrims, he added.

Arbaeen, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40th day after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shiite Imam, Imam Hussein (peace be upon him).
