Iran Press/Iran news: The meeting took place in Tehran on Sunday morning.
The acting Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Cornel Feruta, is currently in Tehran, where he will meet with senior Iranian officials. He met Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation (AEOI), on Sunday morning, and he is due to meet foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif on mid-day Sunday.
The one-day visit takes place at a time when Iran has already taken the third incremental step reducing its commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal.
After the meeting Ali Akbar Salehi commented on his meeting with IAEA Director General, Cornel Feruta, by saying: "This is his first foreign trip since he took over the leadership of IAEA in July, and we had good and constructive discussions today. We reviewed the long-standing cooperation and activities of Iran and the IAEA over the years, and we also reviewed the events which have happened after the US withdrawal from the JCPOA. America's exit from the nuclear deal has had a negative effect on the obligations and commitments of the remaining signatories to the agreement -- the 4+1 countries.
Commenting on the role of European Union on the JCPOA, Salehi said: "Everyone thought that the Europeans would fill-in the vacuum left by America's abrupt departure from the JCPOA, but sadly this has not happened. Even more worryingly, a spokesperson for the European Union has said: Europe will remain committed to the JCPOA as long as Iran remains committed to the accord. This statement really surprises me. Europe's performance has been disappointing in relation to JCPOA."
Elsewhere in his remarks, Ali Akbar Salehi said: "Iran has shown its bona fide intentions in the negotiations leading up to the signing of JCPOA, and in the years that have followed since. But regrettably the other side [United States] was not committed enough to JCPOA, and in the end just abandoned the deal."
The head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation (AEOI) pointedly added: "Iran has decided that the JCPOA is not a one-way street. It should be a two-way street. Iran feels that the agreement has become a one-way street and we have taken appropriate action, in three incremental steps, to redress this imbalance.
