At the Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons, Guterres noted: "Since 1967, five such zones have been established around the world: Latin America and the Caribbean, the South Pacific, Southeast Asia, Africa and Central Asia. They include 60 percent of all UN Member States and cover almost all of the Southern Hemisphere."
The UN Secretary-General said the expansion of such areas would strengthen the norms of nuclear disarmament and global non-proliferation and help build a safer world.
"The perpetrators of chemical attacks must be identified and held accountable," Guterres said of chemical weapons.
The first day of Vienna talks on lifting sanctions between the European Union and representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran ended on Monday after about two hours.
