Tehran (IP) - A two-day Diabetes Update Seminar kicked off at the Tehran Olympic Hotel in attendance of Iranian medical specialists and general practitioners in the field of diabetes disease to improve public awareness and upgrade the healthcare system.

Iran PressIran news: in the two-day event, the latest approaches and strategies for the treatment of diabetic patients and methods for preventing diabetes will be discussed.

Diabetes Updates seminar is held on International Day of Diabetes annually with the aim of increasing awareness of this disease by the Endocrinology and Metabolic specialists.

November 14, was first designated as World Diabetes Day in 1991 in collaboration with the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO). November 14 is the birthday of 'Frederick Banting', a Canadian pharmacologist, orthopedist, field surgeon, and especially the inventor of insulin.

The purpose of naming such a day is to increase public awareness about the causes, complications, prevention, and treatment of this increasingly common phenomenon.

Attending the event, Ali Reza Raisi, the Deputy Health Minister said: One in ten people in the world has diabetes, one in nine people has elevated glucose, and one in two diabetic patients is unaware of their disease.

He stated that three-quarters of diabetic patients are in the Mediterranean region.

Raisi stated: The prevalence of diabetes is high and the World Health Organization is asking countries to keep this rate stable.

Iranian deputy of Health minister noted: Diabetes cannot be predicted, because this disease is multifactorial.

Raisi further added: Diabetes is the fourth cause of death. In 1402, two million and six hundred thousand were registered in the system, about 14 percent of the country has diabetes.

He expressed hope that within the next five years, it should be possible to use Hi-Tec technology to make treatment easier for diabetic patients.
