Deputy Defence Minister Brigadier General Ghasem Taghizadeh emphasized that Iran manufactures mainly defensive -- as opposed to offensive -- military equipment.

Iran Press/Iran news: Speaking in an exclusive interview with Iran Press on the sidelines of a commemoration ceremony for martyrs and their families at Maleke Ashtar University in Tehran, Saturday 24 August, Brigadier General Ghasem Taghizadeh talked about the type of weaponry produced by Iran's defence industry, one of the most advanced in the Middle East.

Brigadier General Taghizadeh said: "The manufacture of weapons systems in Iran is mainly focused on aerial defense, and most of the research and development in the Iranian defense industry is related to aerial weapon systems for defensive purposes."

He reiterated that a total weapon system network, and an air defense package, have been developed and produced by Iranian engineers and experts, with the system being at the mass production stage now.  He added: "The production line is up and running."

In further comments, the Deputy Defence Minister said: "However, we are looking to proceed further. We believe that we have to be strong as Sa'di, the famous Iranian poet has said in his poem: Prepare for war if you are looking for peace."

Brigadier General Taghizadeh added: "We have to be strong and what we are doing and producing are most likely defensive [weaponry], but not offensive [weapons], especially for the people of the Persian Gulf region. We are looking for peace and security in the Persian Gulf region and as friends we are trying to amend fences, discussing all the necessary issues with our neighbors."
