IP - Türkiye's disaster agency AFAD in its latest statement on Wednesday announced that the death toll from Monday's earthquakes in southern Türkiye climbs to 6,234, which increased the number of victims in Türkiye and Syria to more than 8,903 people.

Iran PressAsia: Earlier on Wedensday Syria news agency SANA reported that at least 812 people had been killed and 1,449 injured in government-controlled areas. The White Helmets organization coordinating rescue efforts in northwestern Syria said that at least 1,220 people were killed and 2,600 injured.

Death toll from Monday's powerful earthquakes in southern Türkiye climbs to 6,234, the country's disaster agency AFAD says in a statement. AFAD put the number of injured from the massive quakes centered in Kahramanmaras province at 37,011.

As many as 5,775 buildings collapsed. More than 8,000 people have been rescued from the rubble of the buildings.

Rescue efforts have ramped up in Turkey and Syria, with many people still trapped under rubble more than 48 hours after a pair of large earthquakes leveled cities and towns Monday. 

As the scale of the disaster became ever more apparent, the death toll looked likely to rise considerably.

One UN official said thousands of children may have died.
