Iran's Esteghlal football team was left out of the 2021 AFC Champions League after losing to Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal Monday night.

Iran PressIran news: Al-Hilal FC became the first team to advance to the last eight of the 2021 AFC Champions League, scoring either side of half-time to defeat Esteghlal FC 2-0 in Monday’s Round of 16 clash.

Esteghlal was the better team and created several chances in the first thirty minutes of the match but they conceded the first goal in the 39th minute. Bafetimbi Gomis was on target for Al Hilal after Esteghlal defender Amirhossein Moradmand was tripped in the penalty area and the unmarked Frenchman found the back of the net.

While Leonardo Jardim’s side can look forward with optimism to the latter stages of the competition, Esteghlal’s defeat sealed their elimination from the tournament, ending their bid for a first Asian club title since 1991.
