Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei denounced the U.S. for showing “no goodwill or seriousness” in negotiations, and said President Trump’s recent statement accepting responsibility for an attack on Iran “constitutes an explicit admission” of U.S. involvement in military aggression.

What he is saying:

On Trump’s remarks and U.S. involvement in the attack on Iran:

Baghaei strongly criticised U.S. President Trump’s admission, interpreting it as evidence of U.S. military involvement.

“This is one of the clearest pieces of evidence proving America’s active role in military aggression against Iran,” he said.

“This explicit admission constitutes acknowledgement of an international crime and entails full responsibility for the U.S. government.”

He stated that Iran has submitted this statement to the United Nations Security Council as documentation and is “seriously pursuing documentation of crimes by Israel and the U.S., and working through all available mechanisms for the Iranian nation’s redress, in cooperation with the Legal Deputy of the Presidency and the Judiciary.”

On the selection of ambassadors:
Baghaei clarified that ambassadorial appointments represent the entire Iranian state, not merely the Foreign Ministry.

“Ambassadors are representatives of the state and the system in host countries,” he said, explaining that the process involves coordination across several institutions.

He mentioned that the process for appointing ambassadors to Italy and Russia is ongoing, and that once complete, “we will inform you after the necessary procedure is fulfilled.”

On the Somali pirate attack on an Iranian fishing vessel:

Regarding reports that pirates in Somalia attacked an Iranian fishing vessel, Baghaei said:

“We have received reports of such an incident, and the responsible departments in the Foreign Ministry and other relevant organisations are following the issue.”

He added that the region is “an insecure area, and unfortunately, periodically vessels from various nations are targeted.”

On Kazakhstan’s reported accession to the Abraham Accords:

Answering a question about Kazakhstan joining the Abraham Accords, Baghaei said:

“A regime that continues genocide in Gaza and acts aggressively in the region deserves no recognition or normalization.”

“Kazakhstan has had diplomatic ties with Israel for three decades; announcing this move now is a political show to portray Israel as not isolated.”

He underscored that such actions “increase the responsibility of countries to prevent the real root causes of regional problems from being forgotten or diverted.”

On relations with Australia:

When asked about the consular services provided by Australia in Iran, Baghaei responded:

“As you know, the level of our relations with Australia has been reduced, and we have been informed that Australian consular activities in Iran will continue via other friendly countries.”

On his own role:

Baghaei addressed reports of his possible appointment as Iran’s ambassador to the UN, stating:

“I am at your service and will continue to perform this responsibility with strength and seriousness… as long as the Foreign Minister deems appropriate.”

He added, with a touch of humour: “In my view, the spokesperson role is the most important job in the world, unless you journalists choose a new one for me.”
