Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran has made extensive efforts to prevent the activation of the UN Security Council’s “snapback” mechanism, while warning against its political misuse by Europe.

Why it matters:

The snapback mechanism, designed to automatically reinstate UN sanctions if Iran is deemed non-compliant with the 2015 nuclear deal, has long been a point of contention.

The big picture:

Tehran insists Europe lacks both the “legal and moral authority” to invoke the measure, framing such threats as illegitimate and destabilizing. The European sides themselves failed to fulfil their JCPOA commitments.

What he’s saying:

Foreign Ministry Spokesman: “We are fully aware of the serious consequences of the so-called snapback mechanism. It is not something we dismiss lightly.”

“When we say that the Europeans lack the legal and moral grounds to resort to this tool, it means not only that we reject its legitimacy, but also that we are deeply concerned about its consequences.”

“We will not allow this issue to become a tool of psychological warfare against the minds and spirits of our citizens.”

Go deeper:

The snapback mechanism, embedded in the JCPOA (2015 nuclear deal), has been disputed since the U.S. withdrawal in 2018.
