Jos (IP) - At least 17 school children have been confirmed dead while search operations continue after a two-story building collapsed in the Northern Central city of Jos, capital of Plateau, on Friday.

Iran PressAfrica: The students were writing exams when the two-story building of Saint Academy in the Busa Buji community of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State collapsed.

According to the state Commissioner for Information, Musa Ashoms in an interview with journalists, about 200 people were trapped in the collapsed building.

"The commissioner of Health in collaboration with the Secretary to the State Government (SGS) with the Governor's consent has ordered that all our major hospitals in Jos metropolis should accept and treat injured of the accident.

Because this school has about 400 students and from what we have gathered, as emergencies, about 200 people were trapped in that collapsed building", the commissioner of Information said.

He added that a lot of children were evacuated to hospitals.

Building collapse often happens in Nigeria, leading to loss of lives and properties due to poor maintenance, old buildings, and nonstandard construction, poor quality of materials and workmanship.
