Speaking to TASS, the ambassador confirmed that President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva suggested Colombia's candidacy during discussions among BRICS members.
"It’s hard to tell at this point which country will be the next to join," Soares stated, noting that there is a group of contenders, including several from Latin America. He added that the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan will provide an excellent opportunity for further discussions on the matter.
Currently, BRICS comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. At the 15th BRICS summit held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from June 22 to 24, the leaders agreed to admit Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates as new members, effective January 1, 2024.
The next BRICS summit is scheduled to take place in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24. Russia assumed the rotating presidency of the organization on January 1, 2024, and plans to host a total of 200 events by the end of the year.
The inclusion of Colombia in BRICS could signify a shift in the geopolitical landscape of Latin America, as the group seeks to enhance its influence on the global stage.
As BRICS expands, it aims to foster cooperation among emerging economies and challenge the dominance of Western powers in international affairs.
