The Head of the Emergency Organization of Iran, Pir Hossein Koolivand, has confirmed that at least 18 people have been killed, and 94 others have been injured as a result of a serious flooding incident in the city of Shiraz on Monday afternoon.

Iran Press/Iran news: Heavy rains have resulted in flooding in southern Iran as well. The city of Shiraz which normally experiences little rainfall was hit by a ferocious flash flood on Monday, with floodwaters sweeping away cars in central Shiraz.

Many cars were swept away by floodwaters in 'Darwazeh Quran' district of central Shiraz, with fierce torrents of water sweeping away everything in their path.

Many people have been affected including tourists visiting the city during Nowruz period (Iranian new year). The videos show floodwaters engulfing dozens of cars, and washing them away.

In an exclusive interview with Iran Press on Monday, a Nowruz visitor to the city of Shiraz described how he and his wife and children had a narrow escape when they cheated death as they somehow survived a horrifying flash flood which caused havoc in Shiraz city center. The motorist who had driven to Shiraz from the city of Gorgan in northeastern Iran said he and his family were lucky to survive because other vehicles on either side of his car were tossed and turned and crushed by the ferocious floodwaters. The motorist said only a few cars managed to survive the deadly flash floods.

Meanwhile, a flood warning has also been issued for the city of Isfahan in central Iran, with the possibility that Zayandeh Rood river might overflow because of heavy downpours in the past few days. The Zayandeh Rood river flows through Isfahan city center.

There are also reports that serious flooding has occurred in the town of Pol-e-Dokhtar in Lorestan province in west-central Iran. Several bridges have been swept away by torrents of water, and there are reports that many roads leading to the town of Pol-e-Dokhtar have been closed because of flooding.    103/211
