Geneva (IP) - Iran's Representative to the UN Human Rights Council states the US assassination of Lt. Gen. Qassem Soleimani hit the fight against terrorism a lethal blow.

Iran PressEurope: The 49th session of the UN Human Rights Council was held in Geneva on Thursday with the statements read by NGOs from various countries.

Representatives of non-governmental organizations from Iran spoke about Iran's fight against terrorism at home and in the region, the costs that state and non-state terrorism have imposed on the Islamic Republic, and the support of some countries for terrorism in Iran.

Reading Iran's statement, Maryam Safari said the assassination of Iran's Lt. Gen. Qassem Soleimani destroyed the principles of international law and left a devastating impact on regional security.

She said if there were any doubt in the past about US support for terrorism, the US assassination of General Soleimani confirmed that the US sought insurgency, violation of peace and security, and the slaughter of human rights in the region.

Lieutenant General Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and Iraq's Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) Second-in-Command head Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were assassinated along with their companions in a US drone strike authorized by former President Donald Trump near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.

General Soleimani was in Baghdad at the invitation of the Iraqi Government.
