Iran's President has stressed that the US has been trying to isolate the Islamic Republic of Iran, but the country's status among the countries of the world has been promoted more than ever.

Iran PressIran news: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani made the remarks on Thursday before leaving Mehrabad international airport for his official visit to Baku to participate in the 18th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), saying: "From the very beginning, the Americans have been trying to isolate the Islamic Republic of Iran, but our status among world countries and global nations have been promoted more than ever before."

He highlighted the resistance of the nation against imposed economic sanctions by the US, adding: "The great nation of Iran has resisted enemies and particularly the US' conspiracies."

He referred to the active participation of the Islamic Republic in the regional unions like Eurasian Eunion, the summer meeting of Armenia, the conference between Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia, and trilateral meeting between Iran, India, and Afghanistan, saying: "These meetings indicate the need for our more active presence at the regional and international levels. So, our national security and national interests in relation to other countries will better be maintained."

Boosting Iran- Azerbaijan relations

"Our relations with the Republic of Azerbaijan in the past 6 years have been promoted. Azerbaijan has special significance for us because of our brotherhood and neighborhood," Iran's President continued.

He stressed that Iran's relation with Azerbaijan is moving in the direction of having more strategic ties, adding: "We have come up with important agreements with Azerbaijan regarding the Caspian Sea. In the field of transit, we have Astara (Iran)-Astara terminal and also we are active in connecting Rasht to Astara. This is a transit route that has a great significance for us. It contributes to our relations with Russia and Europe and Azerbaijan and also with other countries that are situated along the route."

Rouhani further noted that Iran and Azerbaijan have industrial and medical, scientific, and pharmaceutical relations, too. 

He concluded his remarks by saying: "We are going to focus on bilateral relations and tomorrow we will also have talks with the members of Non-Aligned Movement."

The 18th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) will be held on October 25-26, preceded by the preparatory senior officials meeting on October 21-22 and the preparatory ministerial meeting on October 23-24.

The Republic of Azerbaijan will formally take over the chairmanship of NAM for the next three years at the Baku Summit.

NAM has 120 member-countries, 17 observer countries, and 10 observer organizations, and aims to uphold anti-war and pacifist principles against imperialism in all its forms.
