Iran Press/Iran news: The spokesman for the Council of Guardians, Abbas Ali Kadkhodaie, confirmed on Saturday that a bill approved by the Iranian parliament and referred to Guardian Council for further scrutiny, has now been approved by the Council, with certain provisos.
The Council approved the granting of Iranian nationality to children born to Iranian women, whose fathers are foreign nationals.
Kadkhodaie added: "The referred bill was considered in several sessions of the Council of Guardians, and it was not found to contravene either Islamic sharia law or the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the Council approved of the bill with certain provisos attached," Iran Press reported.
Kadkhodaie went on to say: "The considered opinion of members of the Guardian Council has been sent to the Majlis (parliament) in the form of a letter."
During a parliamentary session on Sunday, May 12, Iranian lawmakers have unanimously passed a bill presented by the government which allows children with an Iranian mother and a non-Iranian father to ask for the country’s citizenship.
Currently, children in Iran acquire nationality of the country through their fathers, but not their mothers. 101.211
