Switzerland (IP) - The Iranian Permanent Ambassador to the UN Office in Geneva was appointed as the Head of the Conference for the Reduction and Limitation of Armaments, or the Geneva Conference.

Iran Press/ Europe: In the first session of the conference on Tuesday, Ali Bahraini elaborated on his plans for his presidency term in the Geneva Conference and said that the promotion of international peace and security through the elimination of weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear weapons, would be on his agenda.

The conference was established in 1978 and is the only multilateral international negotiation entity for disarmament that follows up negotiations for the development and conclusion of the international treaties in this regard, two of which are approved are the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).

Enforcing the owners of nuclear weapons to fulfill their obligations regarding the complete, irreversible, and verifiable destruction of their nuclear weapons, the termination of the nuclear arms race, a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction, ensuring security guarantees for non-nuclear states, and prohibition of arms race in space are among the goals Iran pursues during its presidency term.
