The former economic adviser at the Soviet embassy in Tehran during 1979 Islamic Revolution has said the Revolution was the beginning of Iran's progress.

Iran Press/Iran news: In an interview with the IRIB World Service Russian Radio on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution, Georgi Ezhov said, "I think that the 1979 revolution had a great deal of benefit for Iran, because before the revolution, Iran was like barrels of oil for the Americans, but now the Iranians do everything they can to advance their own country; if Washington hadn’t imposed sanctions on Tehran, Iran would be at the same level of Germany."

Ezhov said the 1979 revolution liberated Iran from the domination of aliens. Because before that, the Americans considered themselves superior and above all.

The former Russian diplomat continued: "Of course, this revolution was hard-earned, and the United States imposed sanctions on Iran, some of which are still in place today."

He emphasized, however, that the Iranians were able to maintain and develop their economy so that today Iran's petrochemical industry, gasoline, and other petroleum products comply with European standards.

The Russian orientalist added: "Statistics show a large number of Iranian people study at universities, most of them are women, which is not common in the East."

Referring to the influence and leadership of Imam Khomeini (may his soul rest in peace) in the Islamic Revolution, he said: "Imam Khomeini had a lot of credibility and his return to Iran sparked the victory of the 1979 revolution."

The Russian diplomat, who was in Iran during the 1979 Islamic Revolution, has also taken several pictures of the excitement of the Iranian people during the early days of the revolution.  103/211/213
